Preparing for Spine Surgery
Good preparation makes surgery safer and recovery smoother. This guide from Dr. Robert J. Ames, a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon in Sewell and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, covers what most patients need to do in the weeks before surgery. Your surgical team will give you instructions specific to you, and those always take priority.
Medical clearance
Most patients need a pre-operative evaluation, which may include bloodwork, an EKG, and a visit with your primary care doctor or a specialist. Patients with heart, lung, kidney, or bleeding conditions may need additional testing. Schedule these early so surgery isn't delayed.
Medications
Some medications increase bleeding or interfere with healing and may need to be stopped before surgery. These can include blood thinners, aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen, and some supplements. Never stop a prescribed medication without instructions from your surgeon and the doctor who prescribed it.
Nicotine
Nicotine in any form, including cigarettes, vaping, and nicotine gum or patches, slows bone and wound healing and raises the risk that a fusion will not heal. Stopping as early as possible before surgery, and staying off nicotine afterward, makes a real difference.
Bone health
Patients with osteoporosis or low bone density may need testing or treatment before certain operations, especially fusions, to help hardware hold and bone heal.
Set up your home
- Move everyday items to waist height so you don't need to bend or reach
- Clear walkways of rugs and cords
- Plan for help with driving, meals, and errands for the first one to two weeks
- Consider a shower chair, a grabber tool, and a raised toilet seat after lower back surgery
What to bring on surgery day
- Photo ID and insurance card
- A list of your medications and allergies
- Loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes
- Any brace you were given
- A phone charger, if you may stay overnight
The night before
Follow the eating and drinking instructions you are given, usually nothing after midnight. Shower as directed, sometimes with a special antiseptic soap.
