Life After Spine Surgery

The goal of spine surgery is to get you back to the life you want. This guide from Dr. Robert J. Ames, a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon in Sewell and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, covers what most patients ask about once they are home. Follow the specific instructions you were given.

Walking

Walking is the single best activity after spine surgery. Start with short walks several times a day and build up gradually.

Physical therapy

Many patients start physical therapy a few weeks after surgery. Therapy rebuilds core and back strength, improves flexibility, and teaches safe movement, which lowers the risk of future problems.

Returning to exercise

  • Gym and weights: light activity returns first. Heavier lifting usually waits until your surgeon clears you, often 6 weeks to 3 months depending on the operation.
  • Golf: chipping and putting often return within weeks after smaller procedures. Full swings usually wait longer, especially after fusion.
  • Running: typically resumes once you are walking comfortably and your surgeon clears impact activity.
  • Swimming: wait until your incision is fully healed.

Work

Desk work often resumes within one to six weeks depending on the procedure. Physical jobs take longer and may need a gradual return. See Spine Surgery Recovery Timelines.

Travel

Short car trips are usually fine once you are comfortable. On longer drives or flights, stand and walk every hour to reduce stiffness and lower the risk of blood clots.

Sleep

Sleep in whatever position is comfortable. A pillow between the knees for side sleeping, or under the knees on your back, often helps.

Call the office if you have

  • Fever over 101°F, or redness, swelling, or drainage from the incision
  • New or worsening weakness or numbness
  • Pain that is getting worse instead of better
  • Calf pain or swelling

Go to the emergency room for chest pain, shortness of breath, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
